Hemolysis Test on a Magnetic Suspension Centrifugal Ventricular Assist Device

    • To explore the hemolytic characteristics of a self-made implantable magnetic suspension centrifugal ventricular assist device in vitro and in vivo. The blood pump of the ventricular assist device was connected in a mock circulatory loop, filled with fresh sheep blood, and the pump generated 5 L/min flow against a head pressure of 100 mmHg.The vitro hemolytic properties were evaluated by determining the level of plasma free hemoglobin (FHB) at defined intervals.Blood pump was implanted in two healthy sheep in vivo test. After pumping, FHB and hemoglobin (HB) were detected continuously during the experiments. The normal index of hemolysis (NIH) in vitro was (0.075 ± 0.017) mg/L.Vivo experiment results showed that the levels of FHB gradually increased, and the maximal mean values were 0.846 and 1.09 g/L, respectively.Compared with others domestic LVADs, the vitro and vivo hemolytic properties of this blood pump are satisfactory. Therefore, long-term circulation assist experiment of the new blood pump can be carried out to evaluate its hemodynamic and end-organ effect in the future.
