Some complex transformations of carbides occur in the carburized layer of M2 high speed steel during the vacuum carburizing and hardening process. These transformations greatly affect the thermodynamic and kinetic features of the carburizing process and the mechanical properties of the carburized layer. The causes of these transformations are discussed with the theory of alloy phase.
