This paper introduces the basic principle of the method of caustics and its application in determining the stress intensity factors in fracture mechanics, as well as the actual measurement for SEC and TPB specimens. The obtained experimental results coincide with the results of numerical solution. The method of determining the stress-optical constant of the material used by the holo-photoelastic technique is specially described
