STM and STM-Based Atom Technology

Following an introduction to the principle of operation of the Scanning Tunneling Microscope, some examples of atomic-scale surface manipulation using the Scanning Tunneling Microscope are presented. The possibilities of its applications in engineering, and the research activities upon it in the world, especially in Japan are reviewed.
