A Roam Between "Chinese Style" and "Wei Style": On the Artistic Spirit of Cao Cao's Literature

    • Shen Deqian said in the fifth chapter of his Source of Ancient Poetry, "Mengde's poetry still belongs to "Chinese Style", but Zihuan's poetry and the following purely belongs to "Wei Style". Up to now, academic circles still have not understood very much the essence and distinction between Chinese Style and Wei Style, so they also have not understood very much the artistic spirit and the meaning and position in the literal history of Cao Cao's Literature. This thesis holds that the main distinction between Chinese Style and Wei Style is the distinction between the style of "popularity", "abuse", "abstract", "simplicity" and the "refinement", "reason", "reality", "beauty" in the artistic expression, and Cao Cao's Literature still belongs to Chinese Style in this respect; and in the feeling feature the main distinction between Chinese Style and Wei Style is the transition from popularity to gentility, from politicalization to lyricism, from objectivity to subjectivity, from socialization to individuality. So Cao Cao's Literature purely belongs to Wei Style in this respect. Therefore, Cao Cao's Literature has the artistic style like a roam between "Chinese Style" and "Wei Style".
