On Moderate Cultural Empathy in Intercultural Communication:Case Study of the Movie M. Butterfly

This essay introduces theories related to the cultural empathy as the theoretical basis and then takes M. Butterfly as an example to analyze. It points out that the improper cultural empathy may lead to tragedy,and therefore the cultural empathy should be moderate. As a result,in the intercultural communication,people shall,firstly,cultivate the intercultural consciousness; secondly,develop the cultural cognitive ability,which is the deep understanding of one's own culture while trying to know the others; thirdly, change the cultural prejudices and break stereotypes in the real intercultural communication; finally, recognize the dialectal relationship between the whole culture and the individuals. Only in this way can cultural empathy be moderate.
