Abstract: It is known that most university and college libraries in China are overloaded and have undertaken extended services. In addition, new and high technologies have been introduced and applied in the field of library science. Consequently, the modernization of traditional libraries and the contruction of new libraries are the most pressing problems. To meet these needs, this paper presents a brief introduction to the main characteristics of libraries where new and high technology is applied. The following topics are included in the paper: the operating procedures of libraries; the selection of reconstruction, extension and construction methods; the considerations when choosing the architecture and structure of modern libraries; and, the cooperation necessary between architects and librarians to ensure the best designs for modern libraries.
