Abstract: A rough-classification method applicable to the recognition of handwritten Chinese characters is presented in this paper. Based on the directive stroke density of Chinese characters, the extraction technique of the characteristics of handwritten Chinese characters is studied. Effective characteristics of characters are selected in accordance with the variance criterion for the reduction of redundant data,The method was applied to 500 Chinese characters in common use with satisfactory results.
