Abstract: This paper refers to the middle income standard proposed by economists from the World Bank and develops a method to define Chinese middle income group. Based on the national sample surveys, the author analyses the growth trend and composition change of Chinese middle income group. The paper concludes that the government should make policies to not only enlarge the size of the middle income group but also optimize its composition, and then transferring the pyramid-shape social structure into the olive-shape social structure.
