Abstract: The author discusses the cultural characteristics and the evolution process of the 'Beijing flavour novels', and thinks that 'stressing morality', 'enjoying life' and 'heroic style' constitute the basic contradiction of the cultural quality and style of Beijing people, which results in the characteristics of being either simple and honest or desolete and tragic, of Beijing flavour novels. He outlines the changing line of Beijing flavour novels with the times based on the novels by Lao She, Deng You-mei, Chen Jian-gong, Liu Xin-wu and Wang Shuo etc.
